They, too, enjoyed their hotel immensely. The hotel staff arranged private car pick up and drop off at Charles De Gaulle for them, which went like clockwork and the staff was also able to give them personalized assistance with their sightseeing. These clients had been on a couple of escorted tours, but this was their first time going-it-alone and they are ready to return to Paris as well!"

The hotel's location is premium: Eiffel Tower and Napoleon's Invalides Dome lie nearby. Rates are well in-range for the area.

Business travellers will like its proximity to the Porte de Versailles Trade Show Center. Rates are low-to-midrange.

The 44 rooms are rather spacey (for Paris!) and have double-glazed windows. About half of them open out on to a quiet, sunny courtyard and parking lot. The hotel is within easy walking distance of the "Green Corridor", a planted promenade that runs between the Place de la Bastille and Daumesnil Lake in the Vincennes Park. Rates are quite cheap, check the 'Specials'.

We liked particularly those rooms which are color-coordinated. Rates are very affordable in the low season, and mid-range or the high one.

The hotel furnishings and general tone is very French bourgeois with cherry-toned furniture. Rooms are finely decorated with wall paintings or stone walls. Rates are mid-to-upper range for the area.

The hotel is located in the very upscale part of the 16th district, in the elbow described by the Seine on the South-Western section of Paris. Business travellers are only 10 mins away from the Trade Show Park at Porte de Versailles. Rates are quite affordable, in the low range for the location. Don't forget to see the house mascot, a parrot.

The Champerret-Héliopolis lies close to the Congress Center of Porte Maillot (hence the many restaurants around), about 6 mins away from the top of the Champs Elysees avenue. Rates are low-to-midrange. Service is good and speedy.

The owners are kind, always ready to help. Rooms are unpretentious, well equipped with amenities, and feature double-glazed windows. Rates are a steal at less than USD 80 a triple room.

Dark veneers and hardwood are generously used everywhere, heavy rugs and draperies too. This establishment has a something portly to it. Except for a few of them, rooms are rather spacey. Not so surprisingly, rates are in the upper range. But in such a decor, we would venture value for money remains good.

Rooms are comfortable but rather small, decoration is modern with no frills. Rates are quite attractive for the area.

The place sits halfway between the Eiffel Tower and Napoleon's Invalides Dome. The nearby open-air market deserves a morning visit, just as the attached family-run restaurant. The double-room rate is a steal. A word to the wise: book in advance.

It is well situated in a banking district, not far from the Opera House and the 'inner belt', the roadway along which once stood the third line of ramparts erected around Paris. The rooms are well furnished in the traditional 'bourgeois' style, and offer internet access. Rates are in the upper range, but not out-of-sync with the area.

From that standpoint, travelers making Paris a stopover to other Eastbound destinations will find it very convenient. The furnishings are reminiscent of the 1950s in France, nothing luxurious. Double-glazing is appreciated. The place is neat and well run, its staff is helpful. The nearby metro stations ensure an easy access to the main Parisian landmarks. Rates are low range, value for money is good.

The owners gave it a nice character, with walnut burr veneers in the rooms and an unusual feature for a Parisian hotel: a Finnish sauna. Rates are moderate for the area.

Walk down a block to the Rome street, and you'll find many violin and stringed instrument makers. The hotel is housed in a solid Haussmann-style building, and very nicely decorated. Rooms are comfortable and furnished in the late XVIIIth and mid-XIXth styles, a characteristic quite often found in French provincial homes. About 15 mins away lies the Monceau Park, an expense of greenery where the upscale XVIIth district society likes to gather on sundays. There are two subway stations conveniently close to the hotel. Rates are relatively moderate for the area.

Some of the rooms give on the inner courtyard, all of them are soundproofed. Access to other areas of Paris is easy, with plenty of metro stations around. Promotional rates don't come much cheaper for this hotel category in Paris.

The location is prime, about 5 minutes away (on foot) from the Champs Elysees avenue and 7 minutes from the business area of the Iena avenue and the Marceau Avenue. The Tilsitt hotel is a 3-star who belongs to a family with a long history in the hotel business. The current owner, Stephanie Batten, stepped in the footsteps of her parents. She is service-oriented, and that shows in the details: the reception people know who you are when you check in, and they take care of your luggage immediately. Both the owner and the reception personnel are knowledgeable about Paris, and of very good advice as to where to go and how to get there fast. The rooms are comfortable, though not very spatious. Bed sizes available: queen and double. Cleanliness is top-notch, with a superintendent checking the quality of cleaning each day. Report cards left in the rooms allow guests to express their feelings, and we were told the hotel is often complimented. Rooms are air-conditioned, and they are equiped with high-speed WiFi internet access, a commodity appreciated by business clients. The seminar room can seat about 25 persons. Lastly, the buffet breakfast is solid and tasty. Room rates are commensurate with those of a 3-star in this area, but the hotel offers surprisingly good special discounts and last-minute rates on their website: we could get a standard room for EUR 88 on a last-minute booking!

Cross the St Michel bridge, and there lies the magnificent Notre Dame Cathedral (dwelling place of a certain Hunchback).

The owners told us they knew people who like to stay here for that reason alone! Built in a quiet, upscale suburb, the hotel offers half-price discounts on weekends, making already reasonable rates a real bargain.

The charm doesn't end in the lobby: all the rooms have parquet floors and fresh-cut flowers, and some feature beautiful wrought-iron furnishings. Room rates are average for the neighborhood.
Hotel Moderne Saint-Germain www.hotel-paris-stgermain.com 29, 31 rue des Ecoles 75005 Paris	Mr. Gibon (of the Sully Saint Germain) owns this hotel as well. The rooms are quite basic compared with those of the Sully Saint Germain, but they feature warm colors. The breakfast room has a beautiful glass roof and a pool table, and a lounge is decorated with a hand-painted fresco depicting the gardens of Paris. This is one of the least expensive hotels on the street.
Hotel California St. Germain www.california-paris-hotel.com 29, 31 rue des Ecoles 75005 Paris	Same owner as the Sully Saint Germain and the Moderne Saint Germain, but this hotel has a completely differently atmosphere, with lots of intricate details, warm colors (especially red and green) and a medieval-themed decorative scheme. The nice little bar that opens out onto a small interior courtyard is an authentic Paris café. Room rates are comparable to those of the Sully Saint Germain.

Every room in this small, charming hotel housed in a 17th-century building has a different volume and features, but all of them have exposed-beam ceilings. The owner has taken great pains to make sure everything is carefully decorated. The rooms feature old oil paintings in magnificent frames, matching curtains and bedspreads, old furniture and loads of character. One magnificent suite has a secretary that will inspire authors with the worst case of writer's block. Another huge suite, this one on the top floor, has a sloping ceiling and a view of Paris rooftops. The reception area communicates with the café next door. The clerk speaks eight languages. Rather pricey but worth it.

Try to get the one with the splendid canopy bed.

The theater he founded, the Comédie Française, is practically next door. So are the Louvre and the wonderful Palais Royal. The hotel is decorated with lots of interesting, old little objects, such as Art Deco lamps. We liked the soft, indirect lighting, the marble floor and the big marble columns. All the rooms are impeccably decorated. Each has a charming little detail, such as a small bronze statue, and many have exposed wood-beam ceilings.

Something else we find attractive is the location: quiet rue Claude Pouillet runs parallel to bustling rue Lévy, a Hollywood stage-set of a Paris market street. Upscale Monceau Park is also nearby, and major attractions such as the Eiffel Tower are short trips away. The lobby offers Internet access. Good value for money compared to other hotels in the 17th district. Mr. Bachie smartly adjusts rates depending on the time of year, so off-peak travelers will find real bargains.

All immediate feelings triggered by the Regencia. This old but fully renovated palace stands in a class of its own. Like the George V, or the Plaza. Situated on the Marceau Avenue, one block away from the George V and 3 minutes on foot from the Champs Elysees avenue, Regencia is close to everything that spells business and opulence in Paris. Pass the portly facade and the marble-clad Mediterranean entrance, and you soon find yourself bathing in the atmosphere of an English club, with its comfy armchairs, deep carpets, and wooden panels of a respectable marroon. Style, elegance, low-key opulence. The hotel personnel is at your beck and call, without being overbearing. To the rooms! Ah, the rooms. The quality standard here is simply superior, everything is to remind you that you are in a palace. The decoration is superb. The bedding is superb. The quietness is superb. The A/C system works superbly. The bathrooms are superb. Ho, let's not forget: ask permission to take a peak in the suite while you are there: that Sheherazad and the 1001 Arabian Nights. Are we prejudiced? No, we are simply drooling. You would think such comfort calls for palatial rates: well, this is yet another tour de force by the Regencia. Lo and behold! Their "Specials" put the cost of a wonderful stay at practically below the cost of a good 3-star. Our conclusion? You would have to be crazy not fall for this hotel. Paris Eiffel Tower News just announced its latest "Hotel of the Month" for March-April 2004: the Elysees Regencia of Paris.

That's the instant thought which came to our mind as we entered the Hotel Noailles. That, and "say, aren't these Japanese businessmen?". Good sign, Japanese guests like their hotel clean. The Noailles is a 4-star which was seemingly designed with "attention-to-detail" spelled out everywhere. The shiny marble floor is spotless, the furniture in the reception and salon areas very, very nice and expensive. Wrought iron doors, inner patio enclosed in glass panels, several private salon rooms. This hotel exhudes pedigree. Guests obviously expect VIP treatment, and the hotel personnel seemed to handle their requests expertly. The guestbook (livre d'or) is filled with praise and rave comments, page after page. You understand why Japanese tourists and business people love this retreat when you hit the room floors: the rooms are but Tokyo-style, only in a larger version. Fabulous decoration, plush carpet, excellent bedding, sparkling clean bathrooms, wow. Wow. How about rates? Well, that's another good surprise: standard room rates start at EUR 135! For a 4-star hotel of such a quality, so well-situated in the Opera district, near the famous jewellers of Place Vendôme, that's more than excellent value for money. That's a steal.

Exquisite decoration, very nice service. The personnel is very helpful, and they speak six European languages (not that we needed so many). Rooms are richly furnished, and quiet. Bedding is comfortable, linen nicely ironed. The more expensive rooms are spacious (from 150 to 400 sq.f.). Sparkling clean bathrooms are neatly arranged, sink and bathtub made in marble. Location-wise, you are 4 min. from the Champs Elysees Avenue, and 5 min. from the American Cathedral on George V Avenue. The price tag is commensurate with the category, but far from outlandish (EUR 170-270 when we visited).
