A nicely modern
hotel housed in a 1930s building, Ajiel lies next door
to the Trade Show Park of Porte de Versailles, about 15
minutes away from the Montparnasse district, and close
to the Brassens greenery - a recently renovated upscale
neighborhood. Rooms are well equipped, and the hotel staff
is warm-hearted. Rates are mid-range for this hotel category.

Hospitable and comfortable,
Hotel Americain has cozy rooms with modern conveniences.
It is centrally located (the Marais district), a quick
and easy access to some of the major sights of Paris -
Bastille, Montmartre, Notre Dame Cathedral. We liked the
stone walls, and the affordable rates. |
Hotel Armstrong

75020 Paris
Tel: (33) 1 43 70 53 65
Fax: (33) 1 43 70 63 31 |
Recently refurbished,
this hotel offers excellent value for the money. A rarity
in Paris, it has a sauna and a pool table. The owner is
English, a nice advantage for some of us less gifted with
the French language. The subway station around the corner
leads directly to the Eiffel Tower and the Champs Elysées
avenue. |
Hotel des Arts

5, rue Tholozé
75018 Paris
Tel: (33) 1 46 06 30 52
Fax: (33) 1 46 06 10 83 |
Hotel des Arts is
one of the few Parisian hotels which can boast being built
right on the Montmartre hill (remember Amelie?). Its rooms
are comfy, decorated in the bourgeois style of post-WWII
France. Rates are in the low range for the location. |
Hotel de Lille
www.hotel-paris-lille.com
40,rue de Lille
75007 Paris
Tel: (33) 1 42 61 29 09
Fax: (33) 1 42 61 53 97 |
The art-deco inspired
Hotel de Lille is located right behind the Orsay and (across
the Seine) the Louvre museums. A strategic situation for
art buffs who also want to stay in the Latin Quarter (neighboring
universities used to teach their students in Latin, hence
the nickname). The hotel rooms are comfortable but rather
small. Rates are mid-range. |
Hotel du Square d'Anvers

6, Place d'Anvers
75009 Paris
Tel: (33) 1 42 81 20 74
Fax: (33) 1 48 78 47 45 |
Situated on the Montmartre
hill, Hotel du Square d'Anvers's second most remarkable
feature is the view from its top floor - breathtaking.
Furniture style is contemporary, rooms are rather small
and quiet. Rates are upper mid-range for the location.
|
Hotel Le Clement

6, rue Clément
75006 Paris
Tel: (33) 1 43 26 53 60
Fax: (33) 1 44 07 06 83 |
Well located in St
Germain des Pres (the Latin Quarter), the Hotel Clement
could qualify for the adjective 'charming'. Its rooms
are color-themed, and nicely decorated in a modern-yet-personal
way. The hostess is welcoming, and we liked the atmosphere.
Rates are in the upper range but value for money is good.
|
Hotel Louxor
www.hotels-paris-hotel.com
4, rue Taylor
75010 Paris
Tel: (33) 1 42 08 23 91
Fax: (33) 1 42 08 03 30 |
Hotel Louxor is
in need of a good revamping, but we should say its owners'
good spirits and very affordable rates offset what it
currently lacks in beauty. The hotel is situated next
to Republic Plaza, a popular spot from which one can stroll
along the XIXth century "Grands Boulevards". |
Hotel Malar
www.eiffeltower-paris-hotel.com
29, rue Malar
75007 PARIS
Tel: (33) 1 45 51 38 46
Fax: (33) 1 45 55 20 19 |
Hotel Malar struck
us as a very neat, clear, nicely modern hotel. Perhaps
its most remarkable architectural feature is the inside
courtyard around which the building is wrapped up. The
rooms are quiet and well-proportioned, some are spacier
than others. The hotel's location is premium: Eiffel Tower
and Napoleon's Invalides Dome lie nearby. Rates are well
in-range for the area. |
Hotel Moulin Vert
www.hotel-moulinvert.com
74, rue du Moulin Vert
75014 Paris
Tel: (33) 1 45 43 65 38
Fax: (33) 1 45 43 08 86 |
Hotel Moulin Vert
is owned by a Swiss fellow. "Dogs don't breed cats" say
French people, and this man is no exception: his establishment
is as clean as a whistle and hospitable. Rooms are rather
spacey to Parisian standards, and equipped with double-glazed
windows. The hotel is situated close to the Montparnasse
district, about 25 minutes away from Notre Dame Cathedral.
Business travellers will like its proximity to the Porte
de Versailles Trade Show Center. Rates are low-to-midrange.
|
L'Ouest Hotel
www.ouest-hotel-paris.com
3 rue du Rocher
75008 Paris
Tel: (33) 1 43 87 57 49
Fax: (33) 1 43 87 90 27 |
L`Ouest Hotel nestles
in a wide triangle delimited by the St Augustin Church,
the St Lazare train station and the Department Store district.
A bit further away lie the Garnier Opera House and the
Madeleine Church. The hotel is decorated in the 70s-early
80s style. Rooms are either spacey or small, some of them
are wood-panelled with a beam ceiling. Rates are low-range
for the area. |
Hotel de la Porte Dorée
www.paris-hotels-paris.com
273, av. Daumesnil
75012 Paris
Tel: (33) 1 43 07 56 97
Fax: (33) 1 49 28 08 18 |
Recently renovated
in a themed-up tone, the Porte Dorée Hotel is located
in the trendy section of the XIIth district, in the South-Eastern
part of Paris. It is run by a bi-cultural family: the
hostess is from Colorado and her husband is French. Expect
American-style service, and local knowledge of Paris.
Rooms are warm and comfy. Rates are a steal, vacancy is
low, so book in advance. |
Hotel Sport
www.hotel-paris-sport.com
258 Av. Daumesnil
75012 Paris
Tel: (33) 1 43 43 61 36
Fax: (33) 1 46 28 91 57 |
An unpretentious
2-star hotel which offers good value for money in its
category. The 44 rooms are rather spacey (for Paris!)
and have double-glazed windows. About half of them open
out on to a quiet, sunny courtyard and parking lot. The
hotel is within easy walking distance of the "Green Corridor",
a planted promenade that runs between the Place de la
Bastille and Daumesnil Lake in the Vincennes Park. Rates
are quite cheap, check the 'Specials'. |
Hotel Place de Clichy

75009 PARIS
Tel: (33) 1 48 74 76 41
Fax: (33) 1 48 74 00 42 |
Hotel Place Clichy
is located in a busy neighborhood, close to movie-famous
'Moulin Rouge' and not far from the Pigalle red district.
Unremarkable from the architectural angle, the hotel is
adequately comfortable, its furnishings modern. The hotel
staff is friendly and service-minded. Rates are low-to-midrange.

Hotel Paris France

72, rue Turbigo
75003 Paris
Tel: (33) 1 42 78 00 04
Fax: (33) 1 42 71 99 43 |
Tucked between the
quaint Marais district, the Republic Plaza and the Modern
Art Pompidou Museum, Hotel Paris France is located in
one of those slightly off-centered spots which are busy
during the week and rather quiet in the weekend. The recently
renovated rooms are color-themed and well-arranged, with
modern furnishings. Rates a mid-range for the area. |
Baudelaire Bastille Hotel
www.paris-hotel-bastille.com
12, rue de Charonne
75011 Paris
Tel: (33) 1 47 00 40 98
Fax: (33) 1 43 38 57 81 |
The Bastille district
has become one of the hottest spots in Paris lately: young
up-and-coming designer meets latino dancer. A must-be-roamed
place for the guests of the neighboring Baudelaire Bastille
Hotel, a well-noted establishment housing 47 rooms equipped
with whatever is expected for this hotel category. We
liked particularly those rooms which are color-coordinated.
Rates are very affordable in the low season, and mid-range
or the high one. |
Familia Hotel
www.hotel-paris-familia.com
11, rue des Ecoles
75005 PARIS
Tel: (33) 1 43 54 55 27
Fax: (33) 1 43 29 61 77 |
The Familia Hotel
is situated in the eastmost part of the Latin Quarter,
a couple of blocks away from the Jussieu University, in
a quaint neighborhood with a morning open-air market every
other day or so. The hotel furnishings and general tone
is very French bourgeois with cherry-toned furniture.
Rooms are finely decorated with wall paintings or stone
walls. Rates are mid-to-upper range for the area. |
Hotel Boileau
www.paris-hotel-boileau.com
81, rue Boileau
75016 PARIS
Tel: (33) 1 42 88 83 74
Fax: (33) 1 45 27 62 98 |
Hotel Boileau is
housed in a pre-WWII building, and decorated in a modern
yet traditional way. Most rooms are rather spacey, and
convey a sense of privacy. The hotel is located in the
very upscale part of the 16th district, in the elbow described
by the Seine on the South-Western section of Paris. Business
travellers are only 10 mins away from the Trade Show Park
at Porte de Versailles. Rates are quite affordable, in
the low range for the location. Don't forget to see the
house mascot, a parrot. |
Hotel Champerret Héliopolis
www.champerret-heliopolis-paris-hotel.com
13,rue d'Héliopolis
75017 Paris
Tel: (33) 1 47 64 50 44
Fax: (33) 1 47 64 50 44 |
This is a themed-up
hotel, recently re-decorated in the spirit of a ship interior.
Rooms are modern, doubles are rather spacey. The Champerret-Héliopolis
lies close to the Congress Center of Porte Maillot (hence
the many restaurants around), about 6 mins away from the
top of the Champs Elysees avenue. Rates are low-to-midrange.
Service is good and speedy. |
Hotel de la Perdrix Rouge
www.hotel-perdrixrouge-paris.com
5, rue Lassus
75019 Paris
Tel: (33) 1 42 06 09 53
Fax: (33) 1 42 06 88 70 |
The Red Partridge
Hotel nestles in the XIXth district, the North-East section
of the capital, a bit far from its center -- a slight
handicap largely offset by the neighboring Buttes-Chaumont
Park, the quietness of the surroundings, and the 'old
working-class Paris' feeling of the Belleville quarter.
The owners are kind, always ready to help. Rooms are unpretentious,
well equipped with amenities, and feature double-glazed
windows. Rates are a steal at less than USD 80 a triple
room. |
Hotel du Palais Bourbon
www.bourbon-paris-hotel.com
49, rue de Bourgogne
75007 PARIS
Tel: (33) 1 44 11 30 70
Fax: (33) 1 45 55 20 21 |
'Classic' perhaps
describes most accurately the Hotel du Palais Bourbon.
Be it because of the location -- next to the Parliament,
the Rodin Museum, and Napoleon's resting place -- or more
simply because of the owners' tastes, the place oozes
classic French comfort. Dark veneers and hardwood are
generously used everywhere, heavy rugs and draperies too.
This establishment has a something portly to it. Except
for a few of them, rooms are rather spacey. Not so surprisingly,
rates are in the upper range. But in such a decor, we
would venture value for money remains good. |
Hotel Flor Rivoli
www.hotel-paris-florrivoli.com
13, rue des Deux Boules
75001 Paris
Tel: (33) 1 42 33 49 60
Fax: (33) 1 40 41 05 43 |
Location, location,
location: the Flor Rivoli is well situated for anyone
wishing to spend their Parisian time in the midst of the
action. Almost every major landmark is less than 15 mins
away on foot. Besides this undeniable advantage, the hotel
has no other remarkable feature. Rooms are comfortable
but rather small, decoration is modern with no frills.
Rates are quite attractive for the area. |
Hotel La Serre
www.eiffeltower-hotel-paris.com
24 bis, rue Cler
75007 PARIS
Tel: (33) 1 47 05 52 33
Fax: (33) 1 40 62 95 66 |
A small and cozy
house, Hotel La Serre is managed by the Berauds, a friendly
couple who will run the extra mile for their guests. The
place sits halfway between the Eiffel Tower and Napoleon's
Invalides Dome. The nearby open-air market deserves a
morning visit, just as the attached family-run restaurant.
The double-room rate is a steal. A word to the wise: book
in advance. |
Hotel Lamartine Opéra
39, rue Lamartine
75009 PARIS
Tel: (33) 1 48 78 78 58
Fax: (33) 1 48 74 65 15 |
We think of the Larmartine
Opera as a business traveler's hotel. It is well situated
in a banking district, not far from the Opera House and
the 'inner belt', the roadway along which once stood the
third line of ramparts erected around Paris. The rooms
are well furnished in the traditional 'bourgeois' style,
and offer internet access. Rates are in the upper range,
but not out-of-sync with the area. |
Hotel Modern'Est
www.hotel-modernest-paris.com
91, boulevard de Strasbourg
75010 Paris
Tel: (33) 1 40 37 77 20
Fax: (33) 1 40 37 17 55 |
The Modern'Est is
a small, unpretentious hotel located near the Eastern
Train Station. From that standpoint, travelers making
Paris a stopover to other Eastbound destinations will
find it very convenient. The furnishings are reminiscent
of the 1950s in France, nothing luxurious. Double-glazing
is appreciated. The place is neat and well run, its staff
is helpful. The nearby metro stations ensure an easy access
to the main Parisian landmarks. Rates are low range, value
for money is good. |
Hotel Utrillo
www.hotel-paris-utrillo.com
7, rue Aristide Bruant
75018 Paris
Tel: (33) 1 42 58 13 44
Fax: (33) 1 42 23 93 88 |
Built on the foothills
of the Montmartre mound, about 10 mins on foot from the
Church of the Sacret Heart, the Utrillo is one of Paris
smaller hotels with 30 rooms only - a typical size for
the area. The owners gave it a nice character, with walnut
burr veneers in the rooms and an unusual feature for a
Parisian hotel: a Finnish sauna. Rates are moderate for
the area. |
New Orient Hotel
www.hotel-paris-orient.com
16, rue de Constantinople
75008 Paris
Tel: (33) 1 45 22 21 64
Fax: (33) 1 42 93 83 23 |
The area where the
New Orient is located is known as the luthier district.
Walk down a block to the Rome street, and you'll find
many violin and stringed instrument makers. The hotel
is housed in a solid Haussmann-style building, and very
nicely decorated. Rooms are comfortable and furnished
in the late XVIIIth and mid-XIXth styles, a characteristic
quite often found in French provincial homes. About 15
mins away lies the Monceau Park, an expense of greenery
where the upscale XVIIth district society likes to gather
on sundays. There are two subway stations conveniently
close to the hotel. Rates are relatively moderate for
the area. |
Parisiana Hotel
www.parisiana-hotel.com
21, Rue de Chabrol
75010 PARIS
Tel: (33) 1 47 70 68 33
Fax: (33) 1 48 00 00 67 |
Nothing fancy or
quaint about the Parisiana Hotel, the two best features
of which are its low rates and the willingness of the
owners to help you around. This business hotel is located
near the Nord train station, which is very convenient
for people traveling from or to Northern Europe. Some
of the rooms give on the inner courtyard, all of them
are soundproofed. Access to other areas of Paris is easy,
with plenty of metro stations around. Promotional rates
don't come much cheaper for this hotel category in Paris.

23 rue Brey
75017 PARIS
Tel: +33 1 43 80 39 71
Fax: +33 1 47 66 37 63 |
For those of our business readers who travel to Paris
to lock in a deal, the Tilsitt Etoile is a strong
choice. The location is prime, about 5 minutes away
(on foot) from the Champs Elysees avenue and 7 minutes
from the business area of the Iena avenue and the
Marceau Avenue. The Tilsitt hotel is a 3-star who
belongs to a family with a long history in the hotel
business. The current owner, Stephanie Batten, stepped
in the footsteps of her parents. She is service-oriented,
and that shows in the details: the reception people
know who you are when you check in, and they take
care of your luggage immediately. Both the owner and
the reception personnel are knowledgeable about Paris,
and of very good advice as to where to go and how
to get there fast. The rooms are comfortable, though
not very spatious. Bed sizes available: queen and
double. Cleanliness is top-notch, with a superintendent
checking the quality of cleaning each day. Report
cards left in the rooms allow guests to express their
feelings, and we were told the hotel is often complimented.
Rooms are air-conditioned, and they are equiped with
high-speed WiFi internet access, a commodity appreciated
by business clients. The seminar room can seat about
25 persons. Lastly, the buffet breakfast is solid
and tasty. Room rates are commensurate with those
of a 3-star in this area, but the hotel offers surprisingly
good special discounts and last-minute rates on their
website: we could get a standard room for EUR 88 on
a last-minute booking!

Entering this hotel
is a bit like stepping into a museum. Mr. Gibon, the owner,
collects large, extraordinary old objects, such as the
huge, glass-encased clock with a visible mechanism, antique
soap dispenser, early 20th-century mailbox, coat of armor,
swords and working 17th-century fireplace. The charm doesn't
end in the lobby: all the rooms have parquet floors and

The rooms feature old oil paintings in magnificent frames,
matching curtains and bedspreads, old furniture and loads
of character. One magnificent suite has a secretary that
will inspire authors with the worst case of writer's block.
Another huge suite, this one on the top floor, has a sloping

Mr. Hautier, the
owner of this beautifully-decorated hotel, is anything
but haughty: really friendly and outgoing, yet at the
same time respectful and self-effacing. Some rooms have
glass doors opening out on to balconies. The Lyons train
station is just down the street, so this is a perfect
hopping-off point if you're planning a trip to Southern
France: the Mediterranean is now just three hours away
on the new high-speed train. |

Not surprisingly,
a bust of the French playwright the hotel is named after
sits in the reception area. The theater he founded, the
Comédie Française, is practically next door.
So are the Louvre and the wonderful Palais Royal. The
hotel is decorated with lots of interesting, old little
objects, such as Art Deco lamps. We liked the soft, indirect
lighting, the marble floor and the big marble columns.
All the rooms are impeccably decorated. Each has a charming
little detail, such as a small bronze statue, and many
have exposed wood-beam ceilings. |

Hard-working, energetic,
English-speaking Mr. Bachie frankly had us wondering if
he ever gets any sleep: he always seems to be on the job
at this meticulously-maintained hotel. Something else
we find attractive is the location: quiet rue Claude Pouillet
runs parallel to bustling rue Lévy, a Hollywood
stage-set of a Paris market street. Upscale Monceau Park
is also nearby, and major attractions such as the Eiffel
Tower are short trips away. The lobby offers Internet
access. Good value for money compared to other hotels
in the 17th district. Mr. Bachie smartly adjusts rates
depending on the time of year, so off-peak travelers will
find real bargains. |

Ideal for those addicted
to running and strolling because it is located next door
to the Luxembourg Gardens, where you also take the kids
to enjoy marionette shows and sail toy boats in the basins.
Spacious, comfortable rooms with big beds and tables make
up for the lack of a particular style. This hotel caters
to families - not surprising since the owners are a brother-sister
team. They sometimes squabble but don't let that put you
off: this is a very relaxed, down-to-earth place. |

hotel, situated near the Eiffel Tower and the Invalides

coming with a good 3-star hotel. There's a plus though:
the owner is very proud of his coffee, and rightly so
— we personally think it ranks among the best served
at any hotel in Paris. The fruit juices aren't bad either.
The staff is friendly. Quiet, rather spacious, and air-conditioned

Ah! Oh! Lovely. Gorgeous. How refined! Wow. All immediate
feelings triggered by the Regencia. This old but fully
renovated palace stands in a class of its own. Like
the George V, or the Plaza. Situated on the Marceau
Avenue, one block away from the George V and 3 minutes
on foot from the Champs Elysees avenue, Regencia is
close to everything that spells business and opulence
in Paris. Pass the portly facade and the marble-clad
Mediterranean entrance, and you soon find yourself
bathing in the atmosphere of an English club, with
its comfy armchairs, deep carpets, and wooden panels
of a respectable marroon. Style, elegance, low-key
opulence. The hotel personnel is at your beck and
call, without being overbearing. To the rooms! Ah,
the rooms. The quality standard here is simply superior,
everything is to remind you that you are in a palace.
The decoration is superb. The bedding is superb. The
quietness is superb. The A/C system works superbly.
The bathrooms are superb. Ho, let's not forget: ask
permission to take a peak in the suite while you are
there: that Sheherazad and the 1001 Arabian Nights.
Are we prejudiced? No, we are simply drooling. You
would think such comfort calls for palatial rates:
well, this is yet another tour de force
by the Regencia. Lo and behold! Their "Specials" put
the cost of a wonderful stay at practically below
the cost of a good 3-star. Our conclusion? You would
have to be crazy not fall for this hotel. Paris Eiffel
Tower News just announced its latest "Hotel of the
Month" for March-April 2004: the Elysees Regencia
of Paris.

Wow. That's the instant thought which came to our
mind as we entered the Hotel Noailles. That, and "say,
aren't these Japanese businessmen?". Good sign, Japanese
guests like their hotel clean. The Noailles is a 4-star
which was seemingly designed with "attention-to-detail"
spelled out everywhere. The shiny marble floor is
spotless, the furniture in the reception and salon
areas very, very nice and expensive. Wrought iron
doors, inner patio enclosed in glass panels, several
private salon rooms. This hotel exhudes pedigree.
Guests obviously expect VIP treatment, and the hotel
personnel seemed to handle their requests expertly.
The guestbook (livre d'or) is filled with
praise and rave comments, page after page. You understand
why Japanese tourists and business people love this
retreat when you hit the room floors: the rooms are
but Tokyo-style, only in a larger version. Fabulous
decoration, plush carpet, excellent bedding, sparkling
clean bathrooms, wow. Wow. How about rates? Well,
that's another good surprise: standard room rates
start at EUR 135! For a 4-star hotel of such a quality,
so well-situated in the Opera district, near the famous
jewellers of Place Vendôme, that's more than
excellent value for money. That's a steal.

We confess we fell
for the West End. Exquisite decoration, very nice service.
The personnel is very helpful, and they speak six European
languages (not that we needed so many). Rooms are richly
furnished, and quiet. Bedding is comfortable, linen nicely
ironed. The more expensive rooms are spacious (from 150
to 400 sq.f.). Sparkling clean bathrooms are neatly arranged,
sink and bathtub made in marble. Location-wise, you are
4 min. from the Champs Elysees Avenue, and 5 min. from
the American Cathedral on George V Avenue. The price tag
is commensurate with the category, but far from outlandish
(EUR 170-270 when we visited). |
